For example, ascribing a death to “sudden death during restraint” gives no greater insight into the underlying medical cause of death than would “sudden death during a car accident.” The same can be said for “excited delirium.” It may be a convenient label to cluster frequently recurring physical conditions and activities, but offers no guidance as to the underlying physiological mechanisms that caused the death.
